The first time I saw/read about Maiyan was when Kabi and Milly were doing a Bonfire Adventures promo. The place looked pretty dope! Then Natalie Tewa and Rnaze went there on her birthday and I was sold.
How to get there
Maiyan Resort is located exactly four hours from Nairobi. Once you get to Nanyuki, take the junction on the left that heads to Doldol. You will pass the British Army base then take a right up front that will lead to the resort. The road is excellent except the last 5kms which is being fixed by the national government.
Nanyuki is capital of Laikipia County. Located at the foothills of Mt. Kenya, the country is the most scenic region in Kenya, in my opinion. Nanyuki is such a vibe! There’s something about the the chilled atmosphere in the town that makes me wish I could live there. I miss Nakumatt Nanyuki! It was a major landmark in the town. Never missed the opportunity to stop by when I travelled to Nanyuki and beyond. Tuskys has since taken over the building – it just doesn’t feel the same (sigh)!
This place is huge! That was my first impression of Maiyan. “Is that still part of the resort?” I asked. Maiyan sits on a sits on a sprawling 140 acres of land, a vast space that holds six villas, a main building that houses the reception, restaurant and a bar, a swimming pool and spa, aviary, horse stable, man-made lake, basketball court, outdoor gym and so much more.
Enjoy breakfast and lunch at the terrace which overlooks the swimming pool. The food is fresh prepared from ingredients from the the resort’s garden. I appreciated the staff who kept suggesting foods to try out – I was so full after every meal!! Now the bar… hmmm… it is the perfect spot to while the evening and night away!
You won’t get better views of Mt. Kenya than you will at Maiyan. Usually it is easier to spot mountains in the morning before they get hidden by cloud cover. However as I lounged at the main swimming after a hearty lunch, I looked up and there stood Mt. Kenya in all her glory. What a superb view! FYI, Mt Kenya is the only snow-capped mountain in Kenya. With global warming the snow cover is reducing by the year so it is a privilege to catch a glimpse when the mountain is still intact.
Rooftop Jacuzzi and Pool
While I liked my deluxe room, I only went there when I needed a shower or to sleep. What I loved however was the rooftop of my villa! Doesn’t this photo look like those Greek villas?! For some reason the white villa and the blue sky made me think so!!
Want some privacy at a fantastic location? For yourself? With a loved one? Walk up to the top of your villa where you will find a small swimming pool, a jacuzzi and ample sitting space with fabulous views over the horizon. Tip: Start off your morning with a dip in the jacuzzi before the weather becomes too hot. Thereafter enjoy a leisurely rooftop breakfast either under the shade or in the open before kick starting your day. It gets pretty windy at dusk so not recommended for evening use.
If you love your vacations active then Mayian will be perfect for you. Shoot hoops at the basketball court or practice your backhand at the tennis court. Alternatively enjoy a friendly game of soccer at the football pitch . What’s more there are dug out grass terraces for spectators to watch and cheer. The outdoor gym is a novel idea for enthusiasts who want to sweat it out under the blue sky or if you enjoy cycling, go on a bike ride on the sprawling property.
What I loved most though is the aviary and the horse stables! The aviary is this huge bird cage where different bird species including Egyptian geese, quails and bantam chicken are kept.
I loved the horses! Having never ridden one before, the ride was such a thrill. The stable houses 12 horses which the stable hands will be happy to help you ride.
I was absolutely charmed by Maiyan Resort! They get pretty busy over the weekend and I could understand why. Are you and your friends looking for a your next roadtrip plan? I recommend Maiyan. You will get to hang out and have fun together and if you want some alone time, choose a corner of this sprawling property and enjoy a few moments by yourself.
Thanks for reading, until next time xoxo!!
