A stay at the Crowne Plaza Nairobi Airport

After months of closed airspace and grounded planes due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Kenya finally opened its borders to international flights on  4th August 2020. This welcome move meant that airport hotels could also open its doors to guests. Perhaps it is the thrill of being at the airport, but on a cool Saturday afternoon, I found myself driving to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for a night at Kenya’s first airport hotel.

Opened in March 2017 as Lazizi Premiere, the hotel joined the IHG family and rebranded to Crowne Plaza Nairobi Airport two years later.. It is located within the secure perimeter of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a short minutes’ drive to the arrival and departure terminals.

As you walk into the lobby, you are greeted by red swanky seats where you can rest as you wait to check in. The reception staff work behind glass encased counters, a necessary precaution given the prevailing pandemic. The  art on the walls and decor displayed in the lobby is stunning. When you look up, there is the most gorgeous solar-powered cyclical chandelier that lights up beautifully at night!

The elevators that take you to your room and other hotel facilities are regularly sanitized and allow only three guests at a time. As part of the IHG group of hotels, Crowne Plaza Nairobi Airport follows the IHG Way of Clean which ensures that the guest rooms, reception area, bars and restaurants go through stringent cleanliness standards.

Crowne Plaza Nairobi Airport offers 144 rooms spread through out four floors. A huge double bed with stunning white bed spread and a brown headboard sat smack in the middle of my room. On either side of the bed are light fixtures with an additional fixture behind a bright mustard seat which I absolutely love. A television has been mounted on the wall right in front of the bed. Inside a closet I find a robe, an iron box, an iron board and a safe. A tea/coffee station ensures you can have your fix anytime you want and the mini fridge will keep your drinks cold just as you like it. The rain showerhead makes taking a shower a joy and the bathroom mirror has a cool feature that turns it into a see-through window to the bedroom!

Here, you don’t have to struggle to find your room as the room numbers are lighted along the hallway.

Feeling restless during your stay? Work out that excess energy at the fully equipped gym which has colourful, motivational quotes on the walls. Enjoy views of the surrounding landscape as you exercise on the treadmill.

Need to cool off after a gym session? Enjoy a dip in the 1.2m rooftop swimming pool which overlooks the serene airport environs. Kudos to the artist of the eye-catching Nairobi city mural! The poolside bar is a great place to hang out and while the day away.

Do you need to work out any kinks or just spoil yourself during your stay? Indulge yourself at Euphoria Spa which offers a range of treatments, sauna and male and female steam rooms.

If you’re looking to have an informal meeting away from the board rooms, The Sky View Lounge is the place to be. As with the rest of the hotel, sanitizer gels have been placed at the entrance to keep up with safety standards.

Upon entry into the hotel, on the left is Velocity, a bar and on the right are Aroma, a coffee shop and Kitchen 9 the hotel restaurant. For guests arriving at the hotel when the restaurant is closed, they can have a snack at the Aroma which opens 24 hours. Tables have been spaced and wait staff wear masks all the time.
